Something in the air tonight...
Ugh! It's been a killer week. End of session always means long hours of marking, writing reports, etc., etc. Three 12 hour days in a row and no day off this month! >:(
Anyhoo... saw some weird shit on my smokos tonight. I'm guessing that fireworks are legal in Japan, because there were about 20 odd girls from the local art college setting off fireworks in the park behind the building tonight and no sirens. Okashikatta! (It was amusing to watch) Of course, being young girls, they were completely petrified of the equipment, holding everything at full arms length, and running like chooks in all directions the moment anything was lit, but then gathering together to shout "Sugoi! Kirei! Sugoi kirei!!!" when it went off. It was hilarious!
Later, after the girls had cleared out, there were a couple of other girls (or guys - it's hard to tell sometimes! ;) ) doing a little hip-hop dance routine at the back of the building. I've seen this sort of thing before a few times, but usually in front of buildings with big picture windows, so they can watch themselves dancing in the reflection. There are no windows at all at the back of the building, so that was a bit unusual, but not particularly strange. The strange part happened shortly afterwards, when a big SUV blasting music pulled up, a guy in a balaclava got out, and did his own little routine, including handstand walking, on the sidewalk in front of them, jumped back in and sped off. WTF?!? Is this what the kids do for kicks these days? I suppose I can be thankful I'm in Japan - if this were LA, they probably would have sprayed those two with bullets. But it was just surreal, like something straight out of the "You got served!" South Park episode...
I need a beer...
