Earthquake!

I guess it was bound to happen eventually. We've had about 3 or 4 earthquakes in the area over the last year, but they were all so small I didn't notice them. Contributing factors: I'm a pretty heavy sleeper and my work is in one of the most earthquake-proof buildings in the city, if not the country.

This one, however, was pretty big. Big enough to wake me up, to feel the shaking, and to watch the hanging light fixture over my bed swaying. It was still about 200 km away, near Kanazawa on the north coast, where an old woman in a nearby town was crushed by the stone lantern in her garden - decorative and deadly!

I'm OK, though, apart from a temporary disruption to my sleep pattern...

This last one is pretty cool. They had all the data minutes after the quake - long before anything appeared in the news services...

Yeah, I did think about you when I heard there was an earthquake, I'm glad you're getting the whole authentic Japanese experience! Though I suggest you avoid the sarin gass experience if you can!

That's OK, I don't usually take the subway, anyway. But everyone says that Nagoya is overdue for a "big one, so sometimes I actually wonder if I should stock up on bottled water and the like...
